History
Don Bosco Institute Kokar was initiated during early 80s during which the work was monitored from Don Bosco Hatia; however, it was officially established in 1987. The founding father was Rev. Fr. Guido Colossi, SDB, a great missionary from Cassarsa, Italy. The technical school, the Salesian residence cum hostel for ITI boys, parish residence and the parish church were constructed simultaneously. The parish church was blessed by his Grace Telesphor P. Toppo DD, then Archbishop of Ranchi and now a retired cardinal, in 1988 the death centenary year of our father and founder St. John Bosco. During the same period another very important step was taken by starting a village Hindi medium school 2 km east-ward from the base, for the marginalized, the school is known as Don Bosco School Garigaon. It is very much of a charitable work for the villagers cannot afford to pay fee and educate their children in the city schools of Ranchi. Now it has reached up to class X. Another English medium school was started in 1998, a dream work of Fr. Guido, initiated by Rev. Fr. UP. Sebastian SDB, the parish priest of the time.
The Technical School of Kokar began by shifting the existing Technical School from Don Bosco Hatia. Initially it was meant for non-formal training. In 1991 Fr. Brian Diamond came here as Rector. In the same year the non-formal technical school got provisional affiliation to National Council for Vocational Training since otherwise boys would not job. Now it is full-fledged technical school attended by nearly five hundred students for various courses. The English Medium School is now affiliated up to Cl XII under ICSE board. The present strength is above 2400. Don Bosco Garigaon still remains unrecognized by the government. It is because of the nature of the land (Pahan Land) which for ‘Adivasis’ meant for ‘Land Sarna Pujaries’. The process of registration is very complicated. Initially the parish church was attended by hardly five hundred families now its membership is 15,000 living in one thousand six hundred families.
